This visual approach would be more in line with style of the storyboard.  I really like the contrast of stark empty spaces with area of detail.

The simple characters have very strong pronounced shadows that mean they sit well into the scene.

One concept was to move from a dark grey day (as seen in the firs three images) to a sun-filled evening at the end of the piece.
